A fine line tattoo is a delicate, simple design made with very thin lines. It is one of the most searched tattoo styles, and it raises two questions: how long do fine line tattoos last, and how do you look after one? This guide collects what the sources say about fine line tattoos, how long they last, healing, cost and choosing a fine line tattoo artist in Málaga. It also says clearly where the data is missing.
What is a fine line tattoo?
According to Wikipedia (Spanish edition), a fine line tattoo uses very thin lines made with micro needles. It suits simple designs, tiny tattoos and short phrases. It has no large areas of dense colour or thick lines, so the result depends on how precise each line is. Celebrity Ink, a tattoo studio, describes it as thin, delicate lines without shading or colour gradients. Ink'side Tattoo Studio in Málaga calls it "thin single-needle lines", for botanical drawings, small symbols and delicate designs. If you want to compare it with other styles, see our guide to tattoo styles.
Do fine line tattoos fade? How long do they last?
We found no medical or scientific study that measures how long fine line tattoos last. What exists are the opinions of tattoo studios, and they differ a little:
- Ray Studios, a studio in Ireland, says micro tattoos tend to fade faster than bigger ones because of their thin lines and the small amount of ink in the skin. After 3 to 5 years, it says, some may start to lose sharpness. This is the studio's own estimate and no data backs it.
- Celebrity Ink writes that most tattoo artists agree fine line tattoos fade faster than regular tattoos.
- Asylum Ink says all tattoos fade, but fading can be more noticeable in fine line work because the lines are delicate. It gives no number of years.
The studios also point to the same causes: ink placed too shallow, sun, friction and ageing skin. Asylum Ink adds that ink placed too deep can blur while the tattoo heals. A touch-up can bring back a faded line, but Ray Studios warns that each one can make the lines thicker.
So the sensible approach is to ask your fine line tattoo artist how deep they work, whether they do touch-ups and what is included, and to treat any number of years as an estimate, not a guarantee.
Where to put a fine line tattoo
The studios agree that placement matters. Ray Studios says fingers, hands, ribs and ankles get more rubbing and movement, while the forearm and the back of the neck hold up better. Celebrity Ink lists the wrist, forearm, behind the ear, collarbone, inner arm, upper thigh, shoulders and calves as good places, and fingers, feet, ankles and ribs as poor ones. Asylum Ink names hands, feet, elbows and knees as places that fade faster. These are experience-based opinions, not tests.
Fine line tattoo healing and aftercare
Healing works like for any other tattoo. Celebrity Ink says the first healing phase of a fine line tattoo lasts about two weeks, with redness, swelling and peeling. Cleveland Clinic gives a longer picture for tattoos in general: scabs fall off in weeks and the top layer is usually healed after about two months. The full routine, with the sun and swimming rules, is in our tattoo aftercare guide.
The decree of Andalucía says your tattooist must give you aftercare instructions in writing (art. 18). They include avoiding the sun, UVA rays, pools, saunas and beaches while the tattoo heals. Once it has healed, the American Academy of Dermatology advises broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher. Sun is also one of the causes studios blame for fading.

Ink'side Tattoo Studio (Calle Santa María, 13) publishes prices for fine line tattoos in Málaga up to 5 × 5 cm: €50 for one piece, €80 for two and €120 for three, VAT included. Kazzo Tattoo's price guide for Spain estimates €60 to €90 for a minimalist or simple line tattoo of 2 to 5 cm. That is the studio's own estimate. Size, detail and the artist change the quote, so ask for it in writing. Our tattoo prices guide has more examples.
Fine line tattoo studios in Málaga
This list only repeats what each studio says on its website (checked on 25 and 26 October 2026). It is not a rating, and a studio may do more styles than it shows.
- Kazzo Tattoo presents a fine line artist who focuses on minimalism and delicate designs.
- Ink'side Tattoo Studio does fine line among its styles and publishes the prices above.
How to choose a fine line tattoo artist
Look at the fine line portfolio, not only at how many pieces there are. Ask to see healed tattoos as well as fresh ones. Check the basics that the decree requires: sterile single-use material (art. 12.1), written information and a signed consent form (art. 17). Our guide on how to choose a tattoo studio in Málaga lists every check. Say the size and the body area before you ask for a quote. With very small, very thin lines, there is a limit to how sharp the result can be.
