Choosing a style matters as much as choosing a design. The same drawing looks very different in realism, fine line or traditional, and not every tattooist does every style. This guide explains the most common styles using the definitions from an encyclopedia. It also lists the styles some Málaga studios say they do, according to their own websites (checked on 25 and 26 October 2026).

The most common styles

American traditional, or old school

According to Wikipedia, this style comes from the designs of American sailors in the early 20th century, such as anchors and lighthouses. It has thick outlines and strong colours with no gradients. In Málaga, Diavel Tattoo lists old school and Ink'side Tattoo Studio lists traditional.

Neo-traditional

Wikipedia describes it as an evolution of old school that adds modern design and composition. Diavel Tattoo includes it in its list of reference prices.

Realism and micro realism

Realism copies images, in colour or with shading, so that they look like photographs of objects, animals or people, says Wikipedia. Micro realism is the same thing at a small size. Diavel Tattoo estimates it for pieces of 5 to 7 cm, and Ink'side Tattoo Studio describes it as "small, detailed and lifelike". Seven Tattoo says it focuses on realism. Kazzo Tattoo presents a realism artist who works on portraits, animals and landscapes.

Black and grey, and blackwork

Wikipedia explains that black and grey tattoos are realistic tattoos made with black ink (sometimes white too). Blackwork is made of solid black ink, with shading done with dots, hatching or dragging. Ink'side Tattoo Studio includes blackwork among the styles it does.

Fine line

Fine line uses very thin lines made with very small needles. According to Wikipedia, it suits simple designs, tiny tattoos and short phrases. Ink'side Tattoo Studio describes it as "thin single-needle lines". Kazzo Tattoo presents an artist who works on simple, delicate designs. Lettering

Lettering is decorated letters that form words or phrases, with variations such as Chicano or Gothic, says Wikipedia. Ink'side Tattoo Studio lists it among its styles.

Ornamental and other styles

Wikipedia describes the ornamental style as geometric and abstract, including tribal and Maori tattoos. Other styles it names include dotwork (images built from dots), brush or avant-garde (it imitates brushstrokes on a canvas) and new school (thick lines and vivid colours, from the 1970s). Ink'side Tattoo Studio lists ornamental and illustrative among its styles, and Diavel Tattoo also does anime and comic.

Styles some Málaga studios say they do

This list only repeats what each studio publishes on its website. It is not a rating. A studio may do more styles than it shows.

  • Seven Tattoo (Calle Babel, 7) says it focuses on realism. Its artists label themselves as realism, micro and portrait. It takes clients by appointment only.
  • Ink'side Tattoo Studio (Calle Santa María, 13) does tattoo styles in Málaga such as fine line, lettering, traditional, illustrative, blackwork, ornamental and micro realism.
  • Kazzo Tattoo: realism and fine line.
  • Diavel Tattoo (Calle Calderería, 8): realism, colour realism, micro realism, old school, neo-traditional and anime or comic.

How to choose a style and an artist

First think about the result you want: lots of detail and volume, fine lines, thick lines or only black. Then look for an artist who does that style often. Look at their whole portfolio (their photos of past work), not only the best pictures. Ask to see healed tattoos if they have any. Bring examples, say the size and the body area, and ask which style they suggest for your idea.
